Easy Pillow Case Dress

By:

This easy sewing pattern will make you want to frolic around all summer.  Jennifer Neill brings you this easy-to-follow dress pattern that you can complete in under an hour.  This dress is so cute, you'll want to pair it with tights and a shrug and wear it during the colder months, too.

This adult pillow case dress is so fun and fashionable!  Here are a few more pillow case patterns that you can make with ease:  Vintage Apron, Cascading Ruffles Pillow, and Rose Chair Caddy.

Materials:

  • Cord or ribbon for straps
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Old skirt
  • Fabric of choice
  • Iron

Instructions:

  1. Inspired by pillowcase dresses for little girls, I set out to make a fun adult version.  I started with a paper pattern I used to cut out the fabric shaped like this:

  2. Using a skirt as a measurement guide for the hips and the length was 30 inches from top to bottom. I cut a rectangle and simply cut the corners out to create the arm holes. I ironed a 1/4 inch fold in the slanted area and sewed so the arm holes would not fray then sewed a hem.

  3. Next, I folded the top of both pieces down 1 inch and sewed a channel for the ribbon. Now, just pin right sides together and sew from the hem to the bottom of the slanted armholes (between the arrows in the picture) . Last, sew a hem at the bottom.

  4. Turn right side out and thread cord or ribbon through the channel and tie over your shoulders. You can always layer this over a tank top for a more modest look.

Indecent, would only work as a swimsuit cover up.

I have wanted to make a dress like this but could only find a pattern for a child. Seem to easy not to try. Thanks for posting!!!

i'll try it. it seem so simple. thank you

I saw this on Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar was wearing a top exactly like this) and I loved it! Can't wait to make one!

I think this would work nicely as a swimsuit coverup. The reason being it is somewhat shapeless for regular wear. I do have to say, people need to be a little kinder in their responses. The only time I was so negatively forward in my comment was when a person posted a tutorial on a site that was in my mind so simplistic it was patronizing to an adult audience. Otherwise, I think we need to look at the positive and try to give constructive comments. These people spend their precious time to share with everyone, and I do appreciate that.

Wonderful idea to recycle old pillowcases. This would work for any size too!

looks like you're wearing a pillow case. :(

This is just ugly and too revealing

This is so cute, exactly what I was searching for. I extended it to floor length and made the arm area a little smaller. Thanks for the help!

You need to measure down 10" from the top and make a channel to run chiffon ribbon through. The fabric should be a little softer also. Use an "old" pillowcase or maybe thinner fabric. How about a ruffle around the neckline or tail of the dress and a chiffon ribbon around the waist. Needs to be dressed up. You don't want to look like a potato sack.

I thnik this would be a great swimsuit coverup for young girls

This does appear to be headed for a 'wardrobe malfunction' a la Janice Jackson. Maybe bring sideseam up higher.

This is much too skimpy and open to be worn as a dress-maybe a nightie?
