  • Yarn (I bought a skein of gray and a skein of yellow. I'm not sure how many yarn balls this will yield because I haven't finished yet.)
  • Elmers Glue
  • A tray to mix the glue and water in
  • Balloons

Here's a tip: When I popped my balloons at the end, I noticed the yarn was stuck to the balloon, so my yarn balls deflated a little bit. I've heard that if you cover your balloon with Vaseline before hand, this won't happen.

  • When the balloon is sufficiently wrapped with yarn, cut the yarn from the rest of the skein, tuck the end in, and roll the entire balloon around in the glue mixture again to make sure the yarn is coated.

  • Then lay the balloon on a piece of wax paper to dry overnight. Tip: I had to dry mine for about 2 days, flipping the balloon over after the first day.
  • When you're sure the glue is completely dry, go ahead and pop the balloons and pull them out from the inside of the balls. You should have round, hollow yarn balls when you're done.

Usually the glue to water ratio is half & half. Really like the look of your yarn balls in the vase!!!

This is a really great idea. I've been looking for something new to put in my vase trio. I was wondering if fabric stiffener would be good to use instead of glue? That way it will not glue to the balloon and it dries clear and pretty stiff too. I guess I will experiment with that. Thank you for the great craft!

This is very helpful. To be honest i learn something new this morning. Thank you.

This is a nice project, you should off use regular Elmer's glue instead. The balloons are ok, and you can use also twine instead of yarn or maybe a thicker yarn. The balloons will separate from the hollow balls if you use a small amount of vaseline on the balloons, not too much. Those that you made are really cute because are not that big, and if you want to paint them, give them a few days and spray paint them.
